Harden's London & UK Restaurants Guide 2004 - "Suprisingly refined food (as well as fab cocktails) make this very atmospheric (and always busy) Camden Town Caribbean restaurant more of a culinary destination than one might expect." Time Out Eating & Drinking Guide 2004 - "The three-room Mango Room is going from strength to strength. 'Caribbean with a global twist' describes not only the cuisine but hte service, which is distinctly Mediterranean on our visit. The menu contains an enticing selection of dishes. You will need to get side orders alonside the main courses, which boosts the cost, but you can't go wrong with options like seared salmon fillet with pickled mango sauce. We accompanied this beautifully flavoured and textured dish with rice and peas and fried plantain. The warm ackee and avocado salad was a fine and comfortably large non-meat choice. A wide selection of drinks is available, including cocktails. Virgin Colada was a creamy non-alcoholic mix, while the Jamaican Mule consisted of a double measure of Morgan Spice with lime, ginger beer and Angostura bitters. The Mango Room's decor is enjoyably eclectic, featuring earthy tones, raw textures and huge colourful paintings - we sat under a grinning Zorro. Ska tunes or ballads from Ken Boothe or Lord Kitchener add to the laid back mood." Time Out, Richard Ehrlich "Everything abou the Mango Room makes you feel right at home. The welcome couldn't be warmer if they kissed you when you walked through the door. The music is favulous; ska/early reggae compilations and Jazz Jamaica sets lay down a rhythmic foundation for the thrum of voices. ...sharp edged Basqulat-ish oil paintings create a visual buz which complements the music. It is an incredable lively, friendly place, with a good-looking, multiracial clientele and staff. None of which would count for a hill of rice and peas if the food weren't good, but is is. The menu is divided between traiditonal and modern Caribbean. Ingredients are fresh, seasonings pungent but well judged. Ackee and saltfish was a tasty representative of traditionalism, as was the kind of dish you lick off everything it touches, whether plate or fingers. Ebony chicken whings came with a sweetly dressed salad. Next time I will try jerk chicken for traiditon's sake and ackee and avocade with spinach, plantain, tomato and olives for modernity..." Add Lib 2002, John Griffin "The atmosphere is friendly and busy, the service is helpful and cheerful... if you are not hungry when you walk in, your taste buds with stand to attention when you see the mneu. Starts such as crab and potato balls and ebony wings are both cheap and tasty. Many restaurants slip up because they fail to get the details right. At Mango Room the music is just loud enough and the lighting not too bright... on the downside, theh place is always packed and you do have to book in advance. I recommend it very highly as the best value, best food restaurant in North London. Go there soon - it's a gem!" Time Out Eating and Drinking Awards 2001 - Mango Room runner up best local restaurant.
